The Different Types of Synthetic Web Slings
Web slings are one of the most popular types of lifting slings for industrial and commercial use. They are designed to support heavy loads, with an unmitigated tensile strength that is versatile enough for a litany of applications. Web slings are inexpensive, scalable, and easily replaceable.
However, web slings come in different designs and fittings. For the uninitiated, the different types of web slings can be daunting, especially when there is a looming deadline for a particular contractor project. Here are the different types of synthetic web slings, their unique benefits, and their applications.
Nylon Slings
Nylon web slings are the more popular general-purpose slings. They are designed to be unaffected by grease or oil, with the fibers being highly resistant to chemical substances like aldehydes, caustic alkalies, and ethers. While strong, keep in mind that nylon slings are not suitable in projects that will expose the slings to strong acids and bleaching agent, or temperatures above 190 degrees Fahrenheit. Nylon slings have an 8 to 10% stretch at rated capacity. Characteristics of nylon slings include:
- Enhanced flexibility – Nylon slings can mold itself around irregularly shaped loads.
- Moisture absorbent – The retained moisture causes stretch under a load. However, the moisture content won’t affect capacity.
- Grease resistant – Nylon slings are unaffected by oil and grease.
Polyester Slings
Polyester web slings are used in situations where acids may be present, and minimum stretch is required. They are designed to be highly resistant to bleaching agents and acids. However, polyester slings are not appropriate in conditions where alkaline or concentrated forms of sulfuric acid are present. Other qualities of polyester slings include:
- Lower liquid absorption – Less moisture retention compared to other materials such as nylon.
- Softer and less bouncy – For improved load control, polyester slings are softer and approximately 3% stretch at rated capacity. There’s
- Growing popularity – Typically more popular in Europe, polyester slings are quickly becoming a mainstay in U.S projects.
Synthetic Sling Codes
There are other subcategories of synthetic slings. For example, Type 1 is synthetic slings that are designed with a triangle fitting on one end, and a slotted triangle choker on the opposite end. They are designed for a choker, vertical, or basket hitch. Type 2 is made with dual triangle fittings. They cannot be used on a basket hitch.
